Herpes

Herpes is a virus that affects the nerves and skin of a person and leads to sores and painful wounds. Herpes can either be oral or genital. Oral herpes is when a person has cold sores and in genital herpes a persons genital area that is below the waist sores. In other words when area around sexual organs sores, it is called genital herpes.

Herpes is a disease that can transform itself from one person to another easily. It can transfer through mouth, penis, and vagina and also from any cuts in the skin. Herpes has been known to be found in almost every age group. Children and adult both can be affected by herpes at any given time.

Types of herpes

There are basically two different types of herpes;

1 Herpes Simplex Virus HSV 1- this virus causes sour around the mouth.

2 Herpes Simplex Virus HSV II – this virus causes sore in genital areas.

Herpes is a disease that can be transferred at any time to any one. It can be transferred to any part of the body and also from a mother to its child during birth. Infections from herpes can be of two types, primary and non primary. Primary herpes is one which is transferred for the first time to a human being. Non primary is when herpes is transferred or occurs on another part of the body. For example if herpes initially occurred on lips and then occurred in genital areas then it will be called non primary.

Primary infections can only be transferred if there is direct contact between two people. Symptoms usually occur in 2 to 12 days; however it can take longer in some patients.

Symptoms of herpes

Initial stages of herpes are worst than the outbreaks. These initial stages are accompanied by headaches, fatigue, muscle aches and also fever. In the initial stages a person will have outbreak of itching blisters. There may also be fluid around the sexual organs. In oral herpes fluid may be discharged from around the lips. These blisters can disappear in around 10 days. But this does not mean that a person is cured. The virus remains in the body and can break again in case of sexual intercourse, stress, menstruation, fatigue and also fever.

Diagnosing herpes

Viral culture is a method used to diagnose herpes. Infected area is swabbed and then put together with human cells. If there are any specific changes in the cells within 1 to 3 days then it means that a person is suffering from herpes.

Treatment of herpes

There are four drugs that are considered to be most effective.

1 Idoxuridine is effective for herpes in cornea.

2 Vidarabine is effective for herpes in brain.

3 Trifluridine is effective for treatment of ocular herpes.

Acylover is another drug that has been developed recently. It is effective for oral and genital herpes.
