Psychological Effects of Hair Loss
Hair loss has been common in every age. We have seen people lose hair in their early twenties as well as in their fifties or even sixties. Hair loss has not only been a problem for men but also for women. It can be very depressing for both genders and can have a great effect psychologically. Societies generally accept hair loss in man but only after a certain age. Women may be under more pressure in various societies as hair loss is not accepted.
There are certain reasons that can be associated to hair loss in both genders. First is the change in hormones of a person. It can also be an imbalance in hormones and also genes are said to be the cause of hair loss. Moreover there may be reaction to certain therapies and medicines.
Now a day it is possible to have hair transplants. It is considered to be a very safe method. Other than transplants there are certain medicines that can help grow your hair back.
Psychologically a person can get very disturbed if he or she losses hair, especially at an early age. Hair does have an impact on your image. People style their hairs in different ways to look good. This helps their confidence and thus creates self esteem. Hair loss will evoke feelings such as embarrassment of self image which will affect the confidence of the person. They will also have low self esteem. This low esteem will have a negative effect as one will lose confidence in himself. He or she may also avoid socializing.
Depression is another effect. One may lose interest in himself. He may not even want to present himself. This becomes worse when different methods to prevent hair loss don’t work. This thing is very demoralizing and a person may give up. Young people who are suffering from hair loss may be more stressed. Baldness defines more of old age and when one loses hair at an early age and does not fit in with people of his own age, he will definitely be psychologically disturbed.
Since there are people who may take hair loss very negatively, there are also others who won’t be impacted by it a great deal and will take it lightly. Hair loss is considered as a sign of maturity and there are people who feel proud if they lose their hair. This gives them a sense of seniority.
There can be some treatments for hair loss. First of all is the surgery or hair transplant. A person can have it at any age. Next there are also many medicines available that claim that your hair can be grown back. But the real treatment would be to restore the psychological of a person. Therapy sessions may be required to help someone recover from depression.
