Insomnia

Insomnia can be defined as both, having difficulty in falling sleep and also maintain it. Insomnia is a symptom not a disease itself. It is said that bad quality and less quantity of sleep leads to insomnia. Insomnia can affect people of all age groups. Adults are mostly the victims of sleeplessness and often face insomnia. According to researchers, approximately 30-50% of the population is affected by insomnia. Also women have been known to be affected by insomnia more than men.

Main cause

Main cause of insomnia is said to be lack of sleep itself and also quality sleep. A normal adult should get approximately 7-8 hours of sleep. After a hard days work you feel a strong desire to sleep, which is completely a natural reaction. After a hard day one needs to charge the body again and not doing so can have serious consequences. After a long drive car will require fuel and if don’t put in the required fuel and drive the same miles next time, eventually car will run out of gas. It is a condition that has to be strictly monitored and not doing so will have consequences.

How to recognize insomnia

Insomnia can be recognized if a person;

1 Has problem falling to sleep.

2 Awakes in the middle of the night and is unable to go back to sleep.

3 Awakes very early in the morning.

4 Does not feel fresh when he wakes up in the morning.

Types of insomnia

There are basically two types of insomnia, primary and secondary. Primary insomnia is when there are no health related issues involved. Secondary insomnia includes health related problems or an insomnia that is caused by bad health. These causes include heartburn, cancer, asthma, depression, medication, arthritis et cetera.

 

Insomnia can affect a person at any given time. It can affect for both, long and short periods. Secondary insomnia can last till a persons’ illness lasts. It has also been known to occur in cycle that is reappearing after some time. Acute insomnia is caused by any event that distresses a person.

Diagnosing insomnia

A patient can be observed to verify their conditions, in severe insomnia. But generally insomnia is diagnosed by what a person tells to the physician that is his experiences.

Action against insomnia

Advice is the first solution. But when insomnia has crossed into severe zone, medication is required to counter it.

Habits for good sleep

In order to avoid sleep disorders, one should:

1 Have a regular routine for sleep at night. He should only sleep and wake in a particular time.

2 Not consume anything which contains alcohol or caffeine. These things help keep you awake for a long time.

3 Exercise. It is necessary to regularly exercise but make sure that you don’t exercise within 3 hours before going to bed.

4 Always have light food before going to sleep and also don’t go straight to bed after dinner.
